Internships

4 Components of an internship:

  1. One on one relationship with an adult, doing
  2. Real work
  3. Around a student’s interest
  4. Outside the school building
The first two components are the essential components. The second two are negotiable. A student’s internship may arise through a personal connection and/or may take place in school.

4 Main purposes for Advisor/Mentor/Student Meetings:

  1. Discuss student’s performance and strengths
  2. Identify any areas of concern
  3. Identify potential projects/check on project progress
  4. Identify learning objectives that can be developed at school

Stages of Work-Based Learning

  1. Job Shadow – student is primarily observing, helping with simple tasks
  2. Internship – student is learning the work, taking an active part, and ultimately, engaged in a personal project that is of value to the work site.
  3. Apprenticeship – student is engaged in a certification process, and may be paid for work. This is for older students, and is intended to result in professional certification.

Visit/Informational Interview
The purpose is to gather information about the work site and the job and assess interest and a possible fit.
Duration: 1 hour to 1 day
Student Activity: Observing, Interviewing
Bloom’s Taxonomy: Knowledge

Job Shadow
The purpose is to learn about the daily operations of the work; to get a feel for the pace and rhythm, as well as expectations associated with the work.
Duration: Up to six weeks
Student Activity: Helping with appropriate tasks, observing daily functions

Internship
The purpose includes the expectations of trying one’s hand at the work in a personally meaningful way. Students complete a project as well.
Duration: Over 6 weeks
Student Activity: Helping with appropriate tasks; Identifying and carrying out personal project that adds value to the work site
Bloom’s Taxonomy: Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, and Synthesis

Apprenticeship
The purpose is to become skilled in the work; certification is a possibility in some situations; students may be paid.
Duration: Yearlong
Student Activity: Full work responsibilities, with significant personal application.
